Strategic Planning Process Continues

A representative committee, consisting of students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff members as well as business and community leaders, developed a new strategic plan for the Kent School District. They met to review nearly 6,000 comments generated by staff and members of the community as a result of data collection activities conducted across our district over the past several month. The review of data collected indicates prevailing trends of specific priorities, including:

  • High Student Achievement
  • Effective & Valuable Communication
  • Maximize Resources (Money, Time, People & Facilities)
  • Safe, Sustainable, Healthy, and Respectful School Community
  • Culture of Shared Responsibility
  • Highly Effective Staff
  • Effective Partnerships With Families, Community, And Businesses
The committee drafted goals to address each of these priorities, again, using the information gained from several community gatherings. To view a summary of the goals for each priority area click here.

Background on Strategic Planning Process

Strategic Planning Committee Launched 9/30
In an effort to support its belief that all students must be able to compete as global citizens, the Kent School District launched their strategic planning process with the gathering of the District Strategic Plan Steering Committee (SPSC). This 65-member team represents parents, community partners, students, businesses, KSD staff, college and university representatives, non-profit foundations, clergy, and the school board.

Identify Needs and Expectations
The committee is working to identify the needs and expectations for the school district. Support for this process is provided through federal grant funding set aside for improvement planning only. The grant covers the costs associated with the development of the strategic plan in these lean budget times. This effort is being facilitated by Judy Phillips, CEO of the Partnership for Excellence.

Community Participation Crucial
The Partnership for Excellence has a respected reputation nationwide. Especially exciting is the Partnership's policy to tailor their work to the specific needs of the district. Participation of the community in the
gathering of input is a crucial factor in the development of a strong strategic plan. The district believes it is important that everyone in the community be represented and that the product reflects consensus and collaboration.

Plan Development Process Between September 2010 - January 2011
The strategic plan development process will involve five on-site days during the year, as well as the time spent off-site to gather data and input from the community. When the Strategic Plan Steering Committee's work is finished, district leaders will prepare the document to present to the KSD School Board for approval, completing the first step of the process. The second step is to develop and implement action plans to address each strategic priority area. The Strategic Plan timelines will include benchmarks of when to evaluate progress, and regularly adjust the plan to reach these goals. The intent is to use the results of the District Strategic Plan Team's work to focus the work over the next decade. The preliminary plan is scheduled for completion in January of this school year.
