Kent School District (KSD) believes that the physical and mental health of our young people is essential for their success in school. We are committed to supporting your child not just academically, but also in reaching their full potential outside the classroom.
As in the past, we are using a program called Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Services (SBIRT) in all KSD middle schools and some high schools. SBIRT can help identify, reduce, and prevent substance use and to support students’ physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. The screener is optional.
Here’s how the SBIRT process will work:
Screening Tool: Students will take a screening tool on their laptops during the school day.
Counselor Meeting: If a student is identified as “at risk,” they will meet with a counselor on the same day.
Parent Notification: Parents will be informed if their child is in danger of harming themselves or others.
Resource Information: All students will receive information about resources available at school and in the community.
Please note that the results of this screening will not be part of your child’s school record, and only the SBIRT Team will have access to this information.
While KSD is here to help with the SBIRT process, any further evaluation or ongoing treatment services will need to be arranged by you if necessary.
Thank you for your support as we work together to keep our students safe and healthy. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us.
If you do not want your child to participate in this program, Complete the Behavioral Health Screening Parent/Gaudian Opt Out Form online or ask for a physical copy from your child’s school counselor.
If you would like more information, register for an upcoming virtual parent information session.
