Align district and school improvement processes to promote Strategic Plan implementation fidelity and coherence. The outcome of this initiative is an updated school improvement plan (SIP) template and process that aligns school improvement planning to action planning for Strategic Plan implementation. 

2023-24 Winter Progress Update 

The first reading of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) policy took place in early February. Recommended changes have been made for the second reading on February 28. Additionally, the SIP midyear progress update was shared at a February 14 work session. Feedback, celebrations and school leadership voice were valued in this presentation. 

This body of work will inform the updated template and nesting of strategic plan goals into the school improvement plans. This initiative was shared on February 14 during the SIP midyear progress check-in by one of our action planning team leads, Executive Director of Learning Improvement, Jim Schiechl. 

The Teaching and Learning Team reviewed all SIPs to gather a baseline on the metrics and how aligned "activities" in each SIP were being planned and implemented. The commonalities and areas for building more coherence were identified. This will be used to support the development of an updated template with more calibration training across schools. 

The outcome of this initiative is an updated school improvement plan (SIP) template and process that aligns school improvement planning to action planning for Strategic Plan implementation. This is one of many strategies to build coherence across all schools and from the district office to classrooms.

With a focus on nesting school improvement goals with the four district strategic goals, the process will go further than adjustment of language in the school improvement plan template. The required compliance components from OSPI for schools that are in “improvement” status will continue to be included in this template. We will work to develop a tool with the goal of increasing the plan to be more than a compliance process; rather, a living document that centers data-driven goals and strategies. As a result, accountability will be guided across all schools with coherence of the four district strategic goals.

Data outcomes will continue to drive the content of school improvement goals. The resources curated from OSPI requirements for schools in improvement will be applied to all schools in KSD. These include fiscal resource allocations aligned to each goal. Leadership will continue to provide mid-year progress updates to keep the board informed of progress across schools.

Centering Stakeholder Voice

A team that consists of central office and school leaders will engage in a review of the current KSD SIP template. We will also engage in an analysis of current SIPs across schools. Our lens will focus on trends and similarities of current goals,

strategies and metrics. We will align these trends with our new strategic plan goals. This analysis will provide qualitative data to inform baseline of where schools are currently aligned with systemwide goals.

When the SIP tool is updated, the planning team will consider opportunities to engage other leaders in central office to build goals and strategies. For example, intersecting the MTSS steering team work to support implementation of strategies in schools.
