For 16 years, Vicki Lawrence has been a cornerstone of Horizon Elementary’s food service, dedicating the last 15 of those years as the beloved Kitchen Manager. Her unwavering commitment and warm spirit have made her an integral part of the school community.
Vicki’s time at Horizon Elementary has been filled with touching moments and unforgettable experiences. A few years ago, during a third-grade tea party, a little girl invited Vicki to be her “mom” in place of her own. This sweet gesture brought Vicki to tears, and the grateful mother later reached out to thank her for making her daughter’s day special. Another fond memory is when a second grader, after enjoying her lunch, asked Vicki if she had always wanted to be a chef because her food was “always so good.” The simple, sincere compliment melted Vicki’s heart and remains one of her fondest memories.
Vicki is also proud of her contribution to improving lunchtime efficiency with the introduction of the “Today and Tomorrow” boards. These visual aids help students make quick and informed choices, saving time and reducing questions. She finds joy in sharing her enthusiasm for new menu items over the PA system, answering students’ questions, and making the introduction of new foods a fun and educational experience.
Her dedication goes beyond serving meals; it’s about making students feel heard and respected. Vicki takes time to be available to students, understanding that small gestures can make a big difference in their lives. She cherishes events like “Pastries with Parents” and the end-of-year “Carnival,” which provide her a chance to reconnect with parents and former students. These occasions remind her of the positive impact she’s had on so many lives.
Office Manager Michelle Moreno shares, “Vicki’s impact on our Horizon community extends well beyond the boundaries of the school. She does not work in food service because she has to; she works because it is her passion. She sets every student up for a successful day and builds relationships that are evident when former students return to visit. Ms. Vicki is part of what makes Horizon special.”
Principal Miles Erdly adds, “Over the past 40 years, I have never met a more dedicated and caring ‘Lunch Lady’ than Vicki Lawrence. She brightens the day for so many of our Hawks, ensuring they start their day with nutritious meals. Vicki is a true Horizon celebrity and adored by our entire community!”
