Parent/Guardian Forum

The Kent School District (KSD) is committed to maintaining open and transparent communication with families. One key initiative supporting this goal is the Parent/Guardian Forum—a dedicated space for families to share feedback and discuss important topics affecting students and schools.

At the most recent forum, participants discussed the significant $15 billion state budget shortfall and its potential impact on K-12 education. Governor Ferguson has proposed over $4 billion in budget reductions. Although the proposal increases the percentage of the budget devoted to K-12 education, it still raises concerns about how these reductions could affect school funding and resources. The Kent School District is dedicated to advocating for sustainable education funding while ensuring responsible financial management. Recently, Superintendent Vela testified before the state legislature on how the ongoing lack of state funding has placed a significant strain on our resources, impacting students, staff, and families.

“The Parent/Guardian Forum provides an important two-way communication opportunity between parents/guardians and the Kent School District,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Wade Barringer. “I thoroughly enjoy our time together each month and am grateful for the perspective and feedback they provide as we not only discuss current Kent School District educational issues but also give space to adjust to the shifting needs and priorities of our community.”

The forum has met three times this year, discussing a range of topics including:

·    Capital Projects and Technology Levy passage and next steps
Community voice opportunities
New policies
Impact and thoughts on presidential and state elections
Immigration and the Department of Education

For the 2024-2025 school year, forum members and alternates were selected through an application process designed to ensure diverse representation that reflects KSD’s student population. While membership is closed for this year, the district remains committed to strengthening this essential connection between families and schools. The district encourages all families to stay engaged and connected through various communication channels, including board meetings, community events, and direct outreach to school and district leaders.

By working together, we can continue fostering a strong, supportive, and informed school community.
